About the Appliance

The activator, also known as a block brace, is used to correct an overbite and to guide the growth of the jaws. By influencing the position of the upper and lower jaws, this appliance helps them fit together in a healthier, more balanced way. It’s a removable brace made of lightweight plastic and metal parts that fit comfortably in the mouth. When worn correctly, it trains the jaws to move into their ideal position supporting both facial harmony and proper bite function.

Wearing the Appliance

The activator gently pushes the lower jaw forward, stimulating its growth while slowing down the growth of the upper jaw. Your orthodontic team will tell you exactly how many hours per day the appliance should be worn consistency is key to achieving the best results. At first, it might take a little time to get used to speaking and swallowing with the appliance in place, but most children adapt very quickly.

Important Guidelines

If something doesn’t feel right, for example, if the brace is loose, rubbing, or broken, please call the practice, even if you already have an appointment scheduled. During regular check-ups, there may not always be enough time to make repairs, but if you call in advance, we can plan to handle both the check-up and repair during the same visit.
