Retention Appliances – Retainer & Essix

  • Keeps your teeth perfectly aligned after treatment
  • Prevents your smile from shifting over time
  • Must be worn for life to maintain the final result

Retainer (Bonded Wire)

After your orthodontic treatment, we place a permanent retainer, also called a bonded wire, behind the front teeth. This thin wire keeps your teeth in their new, corrected position. In some cases, for example, when you have a deep bite, we may decide not to place a retainer on the upper teeth. This will always be discussed with you in advance. The retainer is discreet and comfortable, and it plays a vital role in maintaining your smile’s long-term stability.

Essix (Removable Night Retainer)

We always recommend using an Essix retainer after completing your orthodontic treatment. An Essix is a thin, transparent, removable tray that fits precisely over your teeth to prevent any movement. You’ll usually receive both a bonded wire and an Essix retainer, they work best when used together.

Important Guidelines

  • If you notice that your retainer feels loose, please contact the practice so we can repair or replace it.
  • Be cautious when biting into hard foods, this can loosen or bend the wire, reducing its effectiveness.
  • We recommend wearing your Essix retainer every night.
  • If your Essix becomes worn or cracked, contact us for a new one, this prevents your teeth from shifting back.

Consistent wear and care are essential for keeping your smile exactly as it was on the day your braces were removed.
