A Hyrax appliance is a fixed orthodontic device used to widen the upper jaw. It is attached to two or four upper molars and contains a small screw mechanism in the center. This screw must be turned at home by a parent or caregiver to gradually expand the jaw.
During the fitting appointment, the orthodontist and assistant will show you exactly how and how often to turn the screw safely.
Once the appliance is in place, it’s important to attend a check-up every week, so we can closely monitor your progress. We strongly recommend not postponing these appointments — this helps prevent delays in your treatment.
When the expansion phase is complete and your jaw has reached the desired width, the Hyrax will remain in place for some time to stabilize the result.

If a band becomes loose or broken, please call the practice, even if you already have an appointment scheduled for the next day. During routine check-ups, there may not be enough time to repair it, but if you call ahead, we can make sure there’s time reserved to fix both during one visit.
It’s important to keep brushing your teeth just as thoroughly as before. After every meal, rinse your mouth carefully to remove food particles that might get trapped between the Hyrax and your palate. Good oral hygiene helps prevent inflammation and keeps your appliance clean and fresh throughout the treatment.
