A headgear, also known as an outer brace or facebow, is a removable orthodontic appliance used to control the growth of the upper jaw and move the upper molars backward. This creates more space so that the teeth can be properly aligned later on. The headgear consists of a metal frame that attaches to bands (rings) placed around the upper molars. The outer part of the frame runs along the sides of your face and connects to a neck strap or head strap that gently applies pressure. Sometimes, small elastic separators are placed between the molars a few days before fitting the bands. These create a little space, making the fitting more comfortable.
The headgear must be worn for at least 16 hours a day to be effective. This is very important, wearing it less can delay or even prevent successful treatment. We recommend wearing it:
For sports or physical activities, it’s best to remove the headgear temporarily to prevent damage. Once your jaw position is corrected, the teeth will usually still need to be straightened with other orthodontic appliances, such as fixed braces.
Handle your headgear carefully. If it’s used carelessly, treatment may take longer or be less effective. Avoid hard or sticky foods, as they can loosen or damage the bands:
You can eat apples or crusty bread, just cut them into small pieces instead of biting directly into them. If a band becomes loose or breaks, please call the practice, even if you already have an appointment the next day. We’ll check whether we can repair it during your visit, or schedule an additional appointment if needed.
