An expansion plate is a removable orthodontic appliance designed to gently widen the upper jaw. It consists of an acrylic (plastic) plate that fits against the palate and includes springs, screws, and anchors to help guide the expansion.
Because the jaw gradually widens while wearing the plate, this appliance is called an expansion plate.
During the first month, it’s important to wear the plate consistently to get used to it. At first, you might notice that speaking and swallowing feel a little different, that’s completely normal. The more you wear it, the faster your mouth adapts.
To prevent damage or breakage, please avoid hard or sticky foods, such as:
Remove the expansion plate before every meal. After eating, brush both your teeth and the appliance. Cleaning steps:
Over time, you might notice white limescale buildup on the plate. If this happens, soak the appliance for up to one hour in one of the following solutions:
Always rinse thoroughly afterwards. If your appliance becomes loose or damaged, please call the practice, even if you already have an appointment the next day. This allows us to check if there’s enough time during your visit to repair it. If not, we’ll schedule an extra appointment so we can handle the check-up and repair together.
