Fixed Braces (Brackets) Treatment

Key Features

  • Straightens teeth and molars using metal or ceramic brackets, archwires and sometimes elastics
  • Brush your teeth at least three times a day
  • Monthly check-ups at the practice

About the Appliance

A fixed brace, also known as a bracket appliance, consists of small brackets that are attached to the teeth. A thin wire (archwire) runs through these brackets and gently moves the teeth into the correct position over time.

At Orthodontic Practice Utrecht, we use self-ligating brackets, this means that the wire is held in place by the bracket itself, so no elastic rings are needed. This modern system provides more comfort and less friction during tooth movement.

During the first few days after placement, your teeth and molars may feel tender or sensitive. This is completely normal and temporary. We recommend eating softer foods and, if needed, taking a mild pain reliever during this short adjustment period.

In most cases, the orthodontist may ask you to wear elastics later in the treatment. Wearing them exactly as prescribed can significantly reduce your total treatment time.

Important Guidelines

Be gentle with your braces, rough handling can slow down your progress.
Avoid eating hard or sticky foods, as these can loosen or break the brackets:

  • Hard candies or toffees
  • Lollipops
  • Licorice or chewy sweets
  • Popcorn
  • Chewing gum and mints
  • Fizzy drinks such as cola or energy drinks

You can still eat apples or crusty bread, but always cut them into small pieces instead of biting directly into them. If a bracket or band becomes loose, please call the practice, even if you already have an appointment the next day. This allows us to schedule enough time to repair it properly.

Cleaning and Oral Care

Excellent oral hygiene is essential when wearing fixed braces. Brush three times per day:

  • Morning after breakfast
  • Afternoon after lunch
  • Evening before bed

We also recommend visiting the dental hygienist regularly. They can show you the best way to clean around your braces. You’ll receive a care kit from us with all the tools you need to keep your smile fresh and healthy. If you don’t have access to a hygienist through your dentist, you’re welcome to schedule a cleaning lesson at our practice, our team will be happy to help you.

Additional Aids Used With Fixed Braces

PowerScope

TurboBite
A small attachment placed on the inside of the front teeth to prevent the upper and lower brackets from touching.

Bite blocks
