Loose retainer? Have it checked quickly

A retainer is there to keep your teeth straight, and most of the time, it does its job very well. But sometimes a small part can come loose. This can happen due to hard foods, teeth grinding at night, or simply wear and tear. Whatever the cause, a loose retainer requires prompt attention.

Why is a loose retainer a problem?

Your retainer keeps your teeth in place after your braces treatment. If it comes loose, even just a little, your teeth can slowly start to shift again — often without you noticing. That would be a shame after all the effort you’ve put into achieving your smile.

The sooner we address it, the smaller the chance that your teeth will actually move. So: if you notice your retainer is loose, moving, or poking, contact us immediately.

What can you do yourself?

Until your appointment:

  • Try not to fiddle with the retainer or loosen it further.
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods on the side of the loose retainer.
  • If you have an Essix retainer, wear it faithfully — even during the day.

This helps prevent further movement until we can see you.

We’ll get you back on track quickly

During your appointment, we’ll check the situation, repair the retainer if possible, or replace it if needed. Sometimes we’ll also make a new Essix retainer to provide extra protection for your teeth temporarily. Everything is discussed with you, of course.
