What types of braces are there?

Every smile is unique which means no two orthodontic treatments are exactly the same. The type of braces that suits you best depends on your teeth, your wishes, and your age. In general, there are two main categories of braces:

Fixed Braces

As the name suggests, a fixed brace is attached to your teeth and cannot be removed by yourself. Because they work continuously, they’re very effective for aligning teeth. We use high-quality materials to make your treatment as comfortable as possible.

Examples of fixed braces

  • Traditional braces (metal brackets)
    The most common type of fixed brace. Small brackets are attached to your teeth and connected with a thin wire, which gradually moves your teeth into position.
  • Lingual braces (inside braces)
    These work like regular braces, but are placed on the inside of your teeth: making them almost invisible. A great choice if you prefer a discreet treatment.
  • Hyrax or palate expander
    Mostly used for children to widen the upper jaw. This appliance is fixed to the molars and usually worn temporarily, often as a preparation for another type of brace.

Removable Braces

Removable braces can be taken in and out by yourself convenient for eating and brushing your teeth. However, consistent wear is essential for the best results. They are often used for children, or as part of aftercare following fixed braces. Clear aligners are popular among adults who want a subtle, nearly invisible treatment.

Examples of removable braces

  • Activator (functional appliance)
    A brace that corrects jaw position, often used for growing children.
    Usually worn at night and part of the day.
  • Essix retainer (night retainer)
    A clear, comfortable retainer worn after treatment to maintain the result. Lightweight and almost invisible.
  • Retention plate
    A removable retainer used after treatment to keep your teeth stable.
  • Aligners (clear braces)
    A series of transparent aligners that gradually move your teeth into alignment. You wear them at least 20 hours a day, removing them only to eat or brush. Perfect for anyone seeking a subtle and modern orthodontic solution.
